Badaling: The Famous One (But Prepare for Crowds)
Badaling is the most visited Great Wall Beijing section – and for good reason. It’s the first section most tourists see, thanks to its proximity to Beijing (only 70 km) and its modern infrastructure. The wall here is wide, well-restored, and has cable cars that whisk you up in 5 minutes. But here’s the catch: on weekends and public holidays, Badaling feels like a shopping mall. I went on a Saturday in October 2023, and I counted 15 tour buses in the parking lot. The walkways were shoulder-to-shoulder. If you go, go on a weekday, arrive before 8:00 AM, and buy your ticket online in advance (¥40 for adults, ¥20 for students). The cable car costs ¥140 round trip. Best for: First-time visitors who want the “postcard” experience and don’t mind crowds.
Mutianyu: The Most Beautiful Section (My Personal Favorite)
Mutianyu is my go-to recommendation for friends. It’s about 90 km from Beijing, but the extra travel time is worth it. Juyongguan has a unique “cloud platform” – a stone archway carved with Buddhist figures and six-language inscriptions. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site within the Great Wall complex. The wall here is steep and short – you can climb the entire loop in 2 hours. Entrance is ¥45, and there’s no cable car – you walk up. I took my cousin here in April 2024, and we had the entire west tower to ourselves for 30 minutes. Best for: History enthusiasts, solo travelers, and anyone who hates crowds. Note: There are no toboggans or cable cars – it’s a pure hiking experience.

If you have 4+ days and want the best photos, go to Mutianyu – and don’t skip the toboggan. If you’ve already seen the Great Wall and want a quiet, historical visit, go to Juyongguan. And if you’re traveling with kids or elderly parents, choose Mutianyu – the cable car and toboggan make it easier and more fun.
