Beijing Halal Food Guide 2026: Where to Eat as a Muslim in China's Capital

I'm Hesham — living in China since 2019, I've eaten through Beijing's halal restaurant scene thoroughly. The good news: Beijing is one of the easiest Chinese cities for Muslim travellers. It has a large Hui Muslim community, a historic Muslim quarter in Niujie, and a good supply of Arab, Turkish, and Central Asian restaurants. Here's where to go.

Quick Answer

Beijing has a historic Hui Muslim community and hundreds of halal restaurants, centered on the historic Niujie Muslim quarter, plus Arab restaurants and Lanzhou noodle shops everywhere.

Niujie Muslim Street (牛街) — The Heart of Halal Beijing

Niujie (Ox Street) in Xuanwu District is the historic centre of Beijing's Muslim community — majority Muslim for over 1,000 years. The Niujie Mosque (牛街礼拜寺), built in 996 AD, is the oldest and largest mosque in Beijing — still active and visitable (check visiting hours for non-Muslims). The neighbourhood around it has dozens of halal restaurants, butcher shops, and bakeries.

  • Niujie Halal Restaurant (牛街清真小吃店): Traditional Beijing-style Muslim food. Try shaobing (flaky sesame bread) with lamb, niuroumian (beef noodle soup), and jiaoquan (fried dough rings). Open from breakfast.
  • Niujie Lamb Hotpot: Thin-sliced lamb dipped in simmering broth, then sesame sauce — one of Beijing's defining food experiences. Multiple restaurants around Niujie serve it.
  • Halal Bakeries and Street Stalls: Sesame pastries, date-filled cakes, candied walnuts. Perfect for breakfast or snacking between sights.

Arab Restaurants Around Beijing

  • Sanlitun & Chaoyang District: Beijing's embassy and expat area. Lebanese, Turkish, and Pakistani restaurants, several with halal certification. The area around Gongti (Workers' Stadium) has multiple Arab-owner restaurants.
  • Wudaokou (五道口): University district — Middle Eastern and Pakistani halal restaurants popular with international students.

Lanzhou Beef Noodles — Your Everywhere Option

Wherever you are in Beijing, you're never far from a Lanzhou Noodle shop (兰州拉面). Run by Hui Muslims from Gansu Province. Green sign with 清真 (halal). Hand-pulled noodles in clear beef broth, ¥15–25. Open from early morning. This is your backup plan in any neighbourhood.

Quick Reference: Halal in Beijing

  • Look for: 清真 (Qīngzhēn) on any sign = halal certified
  • Best area: Niujie Muslim Street — Line 4, Caishikou station
  • Easiest option anywhere: Lanzhou noodle shop (green sign, 清真)
  • Expat area halal: Sanlitun and Chaoyang District
  • Friday prayers: Niujie Mosque — confirm visiting hours for non-Muslims

Supermarket Halal Shopping

Major supermarkets (Carrefour, Walmart, RT-Mart) have dedicated 清真 sections with halal-certified meats, ready meals, and snacks. The Niujie area also has independent halal butchers. If you're staying somewhere with a kitchen, this is the most economical approach for longer stays.
