The Giant Pandas

The Giant Panda House is in the northwestern section. Beijing Zoo typically houses 6–10 giant pandas — one of the largest collections outside Chengdu. Pandas are most active in the morning from opening until about 10:30 AM. By midday they're usually asleep (16–18 hours per day). The best viewing is at the large glass window of the indoor area where pandas eat bamboo right at eye level. Arrive at opening — the line can be 30+ minutes on weekends.

💡 Honest advice: If seeing pandas is your main China goal, Chengdu Research Base gives a far superior experience — 80+ pandas in a semi-natural setting. Beijing Zoo is good if you're already in Beijing, but Chengdu is where the pandas are.

Beyond the Pandas

Golden Snub-Nosed Monkeys: Electric blue faces, golden fur — one of China's most striking native primates.
South China Tigers: Critically endangered — no confirmed sighting in the wild in decades, with only a small captive population left worldwide. Sobering.
Red Pandas: Far more active than giant pandas — entertaining to watch for much longer.
Aquarium (separate ticket ¥130): Surprisingly good polar bear and penguin exhibits.

Tips

Book tickets online via WeChat mini-program — weekend queues at the window are very long.
Bring your own food and water — zoo restaurants are overpriced.
Strollers and wheelchairs available for rent at the main gate.
