What a Buying Agent Actually Does

A buying agent purchases on your behalf from Chinese domestic platforms that don't accept foreign cards or ship internationally on their own -- most commonly Taobao, Weidian, and 1688. They pay for you, receive the package at their warehouse in China, then re-ship it internationally, for a small fixed commission (usually a percentage of the order value or a flat fee). This model is great if you want one or two items, or a limited quantity of a finished product you already know and trust, because it's cheap and fast.

What it doesn't include: factory quality inspection, verifying specs match before shipping, negotiating price or quantity, or any accountability if the product arrives different from what you ordered. The agent executes your order exactly as given, with no extra verification.

What a Sourcing Agent Does Differently

A sourcing agent starts from a completely different point -- instead of buying a finished product from a known listing, they find a supplier or factory that fits your need, actually visit or verify it, negotiate price, quantity, and terms, and monitor production quality before shipping. This is the model I offer myself -- I accompany clients to visit factories in Yiwu, Guangzhou, and the Canton Fair, verify suppliers personally, and negotiate directly with them in Chinese.
