One Family's Temple, Built by 72 Branches of the Chen Clan Across All of Guangdong

I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. Chen Clan Academy (also called the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall) was built between 1888 and 1894, jointly funded by Chen family branches from 72 counties across the whole of Guangdong province. It wasn't just an ancestral temple — it also functioned as a school preparing family members for imperial examinations, and held a huge library.

Quick Answer

Chen Clan Academy is a masterpiece of Lingnan architecture, with a purely symbolic ¥10 ticket. It covers 15,000 sqm with 9 halls, 6 courtyards, and 19 buildings connected by winding corridors, decorated with rare wood, stone, and lime-clay carvings.

Lingnan Architecture at Its Finest

The building is considered one of the finest examples of Lingnan (southern China) architecture — intricate wood, brick, and stone carvings, colorful lime-clay sculptures, ceramic and cast-iron work, and mural paintings. Since 1959, it has served as the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, holding a huge collection of traditional pottery, embroidery, and carvings.

Tickets and Opening Hours

Open daily 9am-5:30pm (last entry 5pm), closed Tuesdays unless it falls on a public holiday. The ticket is ¥10 for adults, free for minors and seniors over 65. Nearest metro: Chen Clan Academy Station on Line 1, named after the landmark itself.

💡 Tip from experience: Take your time with the small details — the carvings along the roof edges and columns tell full stories from Chinese legend, and they're easy to miss if you walk through quickly.
