Chengdu: a city that deserves more than one day

I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. Chengdu is a city that surprises Arab visitors -- people know it only for the pandas, but it's a full city with real history, food, and old neighborhoods worth genuine time. This guide focuses on the three spots I'd actually call essential, in a practical daily order instead of a random list.

The Quick Answer

Start your day early at the Giant Panda Breeding Base (pandas are most active before noon), then move to Kuanzhai Alley for lunch and wandering through the traditional lanes, and end the evening at old Jinli Street for dinner and the night atmosphere. All three are in the same city but need real planning for the distances between them.

Giant Panda Breeding Base: actually go early

This is the single most important tip in this whole guide: pandas are active in the morning and become lazy and sleepy in the afternoon because of the heat. If you arrive at 8-9am when the base opens, you'll see pandas eating, moving, and playing. If you arrive after noon, most of them will be asleep in the trees and you won't see much. The base is large and genuinely requires walking between different zones -- budget at least 3 hours.

Kuanzhai (Wide and Narrow) Alley: wandering and lunch

Kuanzhai Alley is three preserved old lanes dating back to the Qing Dynasty, full of traditional tea houses, restaurants, and craft shops. It's a good spot for lunch and calm wandering, with the "old China" atmosphere many Arab visitors are looking for. Crowds pick up a lot on weekends, so a weekday visit is better if you can manage it.

Old Jinli Street: evening and dinner

Jinli Street is a traditional commercial street near the Wuhou Temple, with a beautiful night atmosphere thanks to the lit red lanterns. It's a great spot for dinner and trying Chinese street food (make sure it's halal before trying it -- most street food there isn't) and light shopping. Crowds thin out after about 9pm if you prefer it quieter.

💡 A tip from experience: the distance between these three spots requires real transit (metro plus a taxi, or a private driver) -- don't assume they're walkable from each other. If you're traveling with family or your time is limited, a private driver for the full day saves you the transit time and lets you actually focus on each visit.

Quick Summary

  • Panda Base: arrive 8-9am, budget at least 3 hours
  • Kuanzhai Alley: for lunch and wandering, weekdays are better
  • Jinli Street: for dinner and night atmosphere, quiets down after 9pm
