If you ask me personally what the best time to visit China is, my honest answer is autumn. The weather turns mild after the humid summer heat, the skies are clearer, and in many mountain areas the trees turn red and gold in a way that's worth the trip on its own. This guide brings together the best destinations and their real timing — not a guess.
Quick Answer
Peak autumn color across most of China falls between mid-October and mid-November. Jiuzhaigou turns earlier (late September to mid-October), while the Great Wall (especially Mutianyu) peaks from mid-October through early November.
Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Visit China
After the humid summer heat across most of China, autumn brings mild, stable weather, ideal for walking and outdoor photography. Domestic tourist numbers are lower than summer (with the exception of the National Day Golden Week in early October), and the sky is usually clearer than summer's humid haze.
Jiuzhaigou Valley (Sichuan) — First to Turn
From late September through mid-October, the valley turns into a carpet of color — fiery red, golden yellow, and burnt orange reflected in its clear turquoise lakes. Jiuzhaigou is already known for its multi-level waterways, but autumn adds a whole extra dimension.
The Great Wall — Gold and Red
From mid-October through early November, the maple and ginkgo trees around the Mutianyu section of the Wall turn a golden-red wonderland. Badaling Forest Park (next to the Badaling section) is known as "Red Leaves Hill" and starts turning earlier than the other sections. Fragrant Hills, Beijing — The Classic Red Maples
Fragrant Hills Park in Beijing's Haidian district is one of the country's four most famous spots for red maple leaves. The park gets very crowded on weekends during peak season — visit on a weekday instead of Friday or Saturday if you can.
Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) is one of China's most important traditional holidays — families gather, eat mooncakes, and watch the moon at night. In 2026 it falls around September 25-27. During it, some tourist sites get busier with domestic visitors, and some shops close early — plan around it if your trip overlaps with the date.
