China as a Honeymoon Destination? Yes, More Than You'd Expect
I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. When most Arabs think of a honeymoon, China isn't the first name that comes to mind — but China has genuinely romantic destinations that rival anywhere else in the world, with a bonus: you get romance combined with a completely different cultural experience.
Quick Answer
For classic romance close to Shanghai, West Lake in Hangzhou is the easiest choice. For mountains and boat cruises, Guilin and Yangshuo. And if you want a beach instead of mountains, Sanya in Hainan. Best time to visit overall: spring or autumn.
| Destination | Best For | Region |
|---|---|---|
| West Lake | Classic romance | Hangzhou |
| Guilin & Yangshuo | Mountains & river cruise | Guangxi |
| Sanya | Tropical beach | Hainan |
| Lijiang | Quiet old town | Yunnan |
1. West Lake, Hangzhou — "Heaven on Earth"
The Chinese themselves describe Hangzhou as "heaven on earth," and West Lake is the reason why. Willow-lined paths, ancient pagodas, and a sunset boat ride — scenery straight out of a classical Chinese painting. You can also visit the nearby Lingyin Temple and stroll down Hefang Street for a traditional atmosphere.

2. Guilin and Yangshuo — Romantic Karst Mountains
A boat cruise along the Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo is one of the most romantic experiences you can have in China — green karst mountains surrounding the river on every side, with the view changing every minute.

3. Sanya Beaches, Hainan — the Tropical Beach Alternative
I've been to Hainan myself — if you want a beach honeymoon instead of mountains or lakes, Sanya has turquoise water and luxury resorts, a genuine alternative to traditional beach destinations.

4. Lijiang Old Town, Yunnan
An old town of stone alleys and water canals at the edge of the Tibetan plateau — a completely different atmosphere, quiet and romantic in its own way.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the best windows — mild weather and green or colorful scenery depending on the destination, away from summer heat and winter cold.
