China Can Be Very Affordable — If You Know How
I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. A lot of visitors spend more than they need to because they don't know the cheaper local options. These are real tips I've used myself.
Quick Answer
The cheapest way to get around China: book trains through the official 12306 app (no commission), use metro day passes if you're taking multiple trips, eat at local restaurants instead of tourist spots, and travel outside peak season.
High-Speed Rail: Book Through the Official App
The 12306 app is the official train-ticket booking app with no extra fees — third-party booking agents usually add a commission. Second class is much cheaper than first, and often cheaper than flying the same route.
Metro: Day Passes Save Money
A metro ride costs roughly ¥3-9 depending on distance. Most major cities have one-day or multi-day passes at a flat rate — for example, a day pass in Shanghai is around ¥18 for unlimited rides, worth it if you're taking more than 5-6 trips in a day.

Local Food Instead of Tourist Restaurants
Street food and local restaurants are much cheaper than restaurants that target tourists, and usually tastier. In cities like Chengdu (Jinli Street) you can try local dishes for very little.
Quick Summary
- Train booking: official 12306 app, no commission
- Metro: ¥3-9 a ride, day passes for frequent riders
- Local food: cheaper and tastier than tourist restaurants
- Off-peak travel: much cheaper
