Two Real UNESCO-Listed Destinations, Both a Day Trip From Chongqing
I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. Chongqing is surrounded by two UNESCO World Heritage destinations — the Dazu Rock Carvings (a cultural heritage site) and the Wulong Karst region (a natural heritage site) — and both are doable as a single day trip from the city.
Quick Answer
The Dazu Rock Carvings are 1.5-2 hours away by private car or bus (¥50-60), and Wulong is 35-40 minutes away by high-speed rail (¥70-120) plus transfer time to and from the station. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Dazu Rock Carvings — 800+ Years of Buddhist Art
The Dazu site (especially the famous Baodingshan area) sits roughly 105km from central Chongqing. By bus: 1.5-2 hours from downtown bus stations, for ¥50-60. By private car: the fastest option, 1.5-2 hours direct with no transfers. By high-speed rail: 55-73 minutes to Dazu South Station (¥108-323 depending on class), but the station is 40km from the Baodingshan site itself, requiring an additional Bus No. 205 (30-40 minutes, ¥6). The carvings themselves were carved into sandstone between 1179 and 1249 AD under the monk Zhao Zhifeng — nearly 10,000 painted and gilded Buddhist figures, including a striking 32-meter-long reclining Buddha entering Nirvana.

Wulong Karst — a Natural World Heritage Site
About 190km southeast of Chongqing. A high-speed train to Wulong South Station takes just 35-40 minutes (¥70-120), but budget extra time for the shuttle bus from the station to the site itself — the real total is roughly 2-3 hours. The area has 4 main sites: the Three Natural Bridges, Furong Cave, Fairy Mountain, and the Longshuixia Gap.

Chongqing Day Trips Quick Summary
- Dazu: 1.5-2 hours (car/bus), Buddhist carvings from 1179-1249 AD
- Wulong: 35-40 minutes by train plus transfer, natural UNESCO heritage
- Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites
