China Isn't Like Your Home Country on Tipping
I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. A question I get a lot: "Do I tip the driver or not?" Straight answer: mainland China generally has no tipping culture. A regular taxi, a restaurant, a barber — nobody expects a tip, and some drivers will even refuse one, either because it's simply not their custom or because some companies formally forbid it for staff.

China generally has no tipping culture. For a private driver or tour guide specifically: tipping is appreciated but never mandatory — if you do decide to tip, 50-100 yuan in cash for a full day's trip is plenty.
But a Private Driver or Tour Guide Is a Different Case
After years of foreign tourists tipping out of habit, it's become a semi-accepted norm specifically within the tourism sector — a private driver or guide on an organized trip. The key thing to understand: it's never mandatory, it's just "appreciated" if you choose to give it. It depends entirely on your own read of the service, with zero obligation attached.
How Much Is Appropriate If You Do Tip?
There's no "official" number, but many travelers give something modest for a full day's trip (say, 50-100 yuan) if the service was genuinely excellent — help with luggage, flexibility with the schedule, good coordination. For a regular taxi or DiDi ride, rounding up to the nearest yuan is plenty and isn't really a tip at all.
My Own Experience with Clients
Most of my Arab clients ask me this exact question before the trip, and my answer is always the same: my price is fixed and stated upfront (¥999 sedan, ¥1,199 van), and there's no expectation or pressure for an extra tip. If you feel the service earned something more, that's entirely your call, not part of the agreement.
