Mogao Caves -- China's Most Important Buddhist Art Site

Mingsha Dunes & Crescent Lake

Massive sand dunes south of the city, with a crescent-shaped lake sitting right in the middle of the desert -- a sight you only see in Dunhuang. Tickets are ¥110 (dropping to ¥55 in the winter season from December to March).

How to Get to Dunhuang

Dunhuang Airport is about 14km from downtown, with year-round flights from Lanzhou (2 hrs) and Xi'an (2.5 hrs), plus seasonal flights from Beijing, Shanghai, and other cities. There are also two train stations (Dunhuang and Liuyuan) connected by high-speed rail to Lanzhou and Xi'an.
