I've Climbed the Great Wall Over a Dozen Times — Here's What No One Tells You

I'm Hesham Al-Daaja from Jordan, based in China since 2019. Every visitor to Beijing wants to see the Great Wall (长城 — Chángchéng), but most end up at the wrong section, pay too much, and walk away disappointed. After more than a dozen visits across different sections, I'll tell you exactly where to go, when, and how to do it right.

Quick Answer

The Great Wall stretches over 21,000 km across mountains and valleys, built in stages over more than 2,000 years. From Beijing, several sections are reachable, each with its own character.

🏔️ 21,000+ km long⏳ Built over 2,000+ years🚗 Multiple sections near Beijing

Which Section? The Most Important Decision

  • Mutianyu (慕田峪): My top recommendation. Well-restored, far less crowded than Badaling, cable car up and toboggan slide down. About 90 min from central Beijing by car.
  • Badaling (八达岭): Most famous, most crowded of all the sections. Beautiful but go on a weekday morning only.
  • Jinshanling (金山岭): For serious hikers. The 10km hike to Simatai is one of the best walks in China.
  • Jiankou (箭扣): The dramatic crumbling wall you see in magazine photos. Unrestored, steep, requires a local guide. Unforgettable.

Recommendation by Visitor Type

  • First-time visitor: Mutianyu — cable car up, toboggan down, 2-3 hours
  • Iconic photo, easy access: Badaling — weekday morning only
  • Serious hiker: Jinshanling → Simatai (book in advance)
  • Photographer: Jiankou — hire a guide, go at sunrise

Getting There

Private car: Best option. Round trip from central Beijing to Mutianyu: ¥400–600 for the day including waiting time.
Bus: Bus 916 express from Dongzhimen to Huairou, then a local minibus. About ¥40 each way, 2+ hours.

Tickets (2026)

  • Mutianyu: ¥65 entry. Cable car: ¥100 return. Toboggan: ¥100 (worth it).
  • Badaling: ¥40. Book online in advance — timed entry sells out on weekends.
  • Best season: Weekday mornings. April–May and October have the best weather and colours. Avoid Golden Week (Oct 1–7) completely.

The Experience

The first time you stand on the wall and see it snake across mountain ridges in both directions — it's genuinely humbling. You're standing on something built over 2,000 years to protect an empire. On quiet weekday mornings at Mutianyu, with mist over the mountains and almost no other visitors, it's one of the most peaceful experiences China offers. I've done it in every season and autumn is my favourite — the mountains turn red and gold around the wall.
