The Canton Fair Runs Twice a Year — Guangzhou's Markets Run All Year

I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. The Canton Fair only opens in April and October, but Guangzhou has dozens of permanent wholesale markets that run year-round — most of them clustered around Guangzhou Railway Station (Yuexiu District). This is my guide to the main ones, for anyone visiting outside fair season or wanting to widen their search into other product categories.

Clothing Markets: Baima, Zhanxi, and World Trade Clothing City

Baima Clothing Wholesale Market — at No. 16 Zhan Nan Road, Yuexiu District, directly opposite Guangzhou Railway Station. A 10-floor building covering roughly 60,000 sqm: floors 1, 4, and 5 carry higher-quality women's clothing from larger factories, floors 2 and 3 carry cheaper fashion-forward women's clothing from smaller factories, and floor 6 carries mid-to-high quality men's clothing. Open daily, roughly 9am-6pm.

Guangzhou World Trade Clothing City — on Zhanqian Road, a huge complex of roughly 280,000 sqm (2 underground floors plus 9 above ground), specializing in original men's and women's clothing plus shoes, accessories, and bags.

Zhanxi Clothing Wholesale Market — also near the railway station, open roughly 9am-6pm, specializing in very cheap, fast-fashion items (t-shirts, jackets, shoes).

Baiyun World Leather Trading Centre

Located at No. 1356-1358 Jiefang North Road, Sanyuanli, Yuexiu District — the largest and most comprehensive leather goods wholesale market in China. It covers roughly 23,000 sqm, with more than 1,100 shops and over 1,200 registered leather goods brands. Nearest metro: Sanyuanli Station (Line 2), Exit A, or Ziyuangang Station (Line 11).

Yide Road: Gifts, Handicrafts, and Accessories

Yide Road is over 100 years old and historically known as Guangzhou's "Dried Seafood Street" — but around it and in its side buildings are wholesale markets specializing in toys, gifts, stationery, and seasonal decorations, plus a dedicated arts-and-crafts complex (Dejin Wholesale Market, at 235-243 Yide Road). A nearby market on Taikang Road (No. 111) specializes in crystal, jade, and pearl jewelry plus jewelry-making supplies.

💡 Tip from experience: Most of these markets are wholesale-only — you can't buy a single piece, there's a minimum order quantity. Bring an interpreter who knows the local negotiation style, since the first price quoted is almost always higher than the real one.

Practical Tips Before You Go

Carry some backup cash, though most shops now accept WeChat Pay and Alipay
The markets get extremely crowded around Chinese public holidays — avoid those dates if you can
If you don't speak Chinese, bring an interpreter — price negotiation is a core part of the culture here
Plan for a full day if you want to cover more than one zone — they're all close together around the railway station
