Shanghai Has Two Airports, Not One

I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. The first thing to know about Shanghai: it has two completely different airports. Pudong International (PVG) is about 40km from downtown and takes roughly an hour by car in normal traffic — longer at peak times. Hongqiao (SHA) is much closer, about 19km, and gets you there in 30-40 minutes. If whoever's meeting you doesn't know which airport you're actually landing at, you can lose a full hour for nothing.

Quick Answer

A private driver in Shanghai starts from ¥999/day for a sedan and ¥1,199 for a van. Airport pickup starts from ¥499 — make sure which airport (Pudong and Hongqiao are completely different). Day trips to Zhujiajiao, Suzhou, and Hangzhou are all doable in a single day.

How Much Does a Private Driver in Shanghai Cost? (Same Real 2026 Prices)

Pricing is standardized across every city I work in, per vehicle per day (8-hour standard):

  • Sedan (1-4 people): ¥999/day
  • Family van (1-7 people): ¥1,199/day
  • Airport pickup (Pudong or Hongqiao): starts from ¥499
  • Extra hour: starts from ¥100

Price includes fuel and parking, plus my personal support online all day. Message me on WhatsApp with your airport and timing and I'll confirm your exact price before booking — the airport you're landing at does affect the final number.

💡 Tip from experience: if your trip covers a day in Shanghai plus a day trip out (Suzhou or Hangzhou), book 5 days or more for an automatic 10% discount on the full price.

Day Trips from Shanghai — the Real Distances

Shanghai's location makes it a great base for single-day trips by car:

DestinationDistanceDrive Time
Zhujiajiao ("Venice of Shanghai")~35km40 min
Suzhou (gardens & old city)~95-100km1-1.5hr
Wuzhen (ancient water town)~128km2-3hr
Hangzhou (West Lake)~144km~2.5hr

Any of these work as a single-day round trip from Shanghai — no need to book a separate hotel, the driver takes you there and back the same day.

Does the Driver Speak Arabic?

Same honest answer as every other city: the drivers are local Chinese, they know the roads well and speak basic English with a translation device on hand, but they aren't Arabic speakers. I'm online with you on WhatsApp all day for any coordination or translation you need.
