The Island's Story: From Foreign Concession to Protected Heritage Quarter

After the Second Opium War and the Treaty of Nanjing, Britain and France were granted Shamian as a foreign concession in 1859 — they split it into a British zone and a French zone, separated by a small canal (later filled in and turned into a street). It stayed under foreign administration until 1943. Today, the colonial-era buildings (Neoclassical, Gothic Revival, Art Deco) are fully preserved, and the whole island is a protected heritage zone.

Shamian Christian Church (Christ Church)

Built by the Church of England in 1865 for British expatriates, in Victorian style. It still stands, preserved, at the center of the island — one of the clearest surviving markers of the colonial period.

At the other end of the island stands Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel, a Catholic church built by the French in 1890 in Gothic style — the two churches sum up the island's historic British-French split.

💡 Tip from experience: Walk the island early morning or just before sunset — the light is better for photos, and the heat is easier to handle than midday in southern China.

The nearest metro is Huangsha Station on Line 1 or 6, Exit F, then a 5-minute walk across the island's north bridge. Or a taxi/DiDi from the city center for roughly ¥15-25.
