A Full Day in Shanghai on a Budget

I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. Shanghai has plenty of free or cheap things to do — you don't need to spend a lot to see its most important sights. This is a real one-day itinerary, built from my own experience, with a real approximate cost.

Quick Answer

Full day: Shanghai Museum (free) → Nanjing Road on foot (free) → The Bund (free). Total cost is under ¥100 per person (transport + lunch), not counting the optional Yu Garden add-on.

Morning: Shanghai Museum (Free)

Start your day at the Shanghai Museum on People's Square — free entry with your passport, and one of the best museums of ancient Chinese art in the world. Set aside at least two hours. Nearest metro: People's Square (Line 1, 2, or 8).

Midday: Nanjing Road on Foot (Free)

From the museum, walk toward East Nanjing Road — 1.2km of shops and restaurants ending at the Bund. Grab lunch at a cheap local restaurant instead of the pricier tourist-facing ones.

Afternoon: The Bund (Free)

The Bund itself is completely free — walk the waterfront and see the modern Pudong skyline facing off against the old European buildings. One of Shanghai's most famous views, and it costs nothing.

💡 Tip from experience: if you have extra time and ¥30-40 in your budget, add Yu Garden nearby — a traditional Chinese garden well worth the visit.

Approximate Cost for the Full Day

Metro (3-4 short rides): around ¥12-20. Shanghai Museum: free. Nanjing Road and the Bund: free. Local lunch: ¥30-50 per person. Approximate total: under ¥100 per person, not counting the optional Yu Garden add-on.

Itinerary Summary

  • Morning: Shanghai Museum (free)
  • Midday: Nanjing Road on foot + local lunch (¥30-50)
  • Afternoon: The Bund (free)
  • Total cost: under ¥100 per person
