Shanghai Is Surrounded by Four Real Destinations Worth a Full Day Trip

I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. The high-speed rail network around Shanghai is one of the densest in China — four nearby cities and destinations you can visit in a single day, there and back, each with a completely different character.

Suzhou is the closest (15-30 minutes, from ¥21), Hangzhou is one to two hours, Nanjing is roughly 1.5-2 hours, and the Wuzhen water town is about two hours by direct bus (¥55).

Suzhou — the Closest and Fastest

Hangzhou — West Lake

Nanjing — the Ancient Capital

Wuzhen — a Traditional Water Town

About 128km from Shanghai — a direct bus from Shanghai South or Hongqiao bus station takes roughly two hours for about ¥55, or a private car takes 2-3 hours. The town is split into two ticketed zones: Xizha (the western, more-visited zone) at ¥150, and Dongzha (the eastern zone) at ¥100-110, or a combined ticket for both zones at roughly ¥190.

💡 Tip from experience: Suzhou is the easiest, least tiring day trip — a very short train ride. If you want a deeper experience (canals, an overnight stay), Wuzhen is the better choice.
