A Neighborhood With No Entry Ticket and No Single Landmark — and That's What Makes It Special
I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. Shanghai's former French Concession isn't a single landmark you visit and leave — it's an entire neighborhood of tree-lined streets shaded by mature plane trees, historic "shikumen" houses, and Art Deco architecture from the 1920s. There's no gate and no ticket — you just walk and discover.
Quick Answer
The former French Concession has no entry ticket and no single landmark — tree-lined streets, historic shikumen houses, and Art Deco architecture from the 1920s.
Wukang Road
One of the best-preserved streets in the area. Its standout landmark is the triangular Wukang Mansion, designed by the famous Hungarian-Slovak architect László Hudec, and considered one of the most important symbols of French Concession architecture — a blend of French and modernist style.

Tianzifang — Art and Craft Instead of Brand Names
Another redeveloped area of "shikumen" houses, but unlike the neighboring Xintiandi district (which leans toward brand names and entertainment), Tianzifang kept the original houses and focuses on art, handicrafts, and small independent shops.
How Do You Get There?
Metro Line 10 or 11 to Jiaotong University station (Exit 7) puts you a 5-minute walk from Wukang Road, or Shanghai Library station (Exit 1) from the other side. Metro Line 1 runs under Huaihai Road, the area's main shopping street — its stations from east to west are South Huangpi Road, South Shaanxi Road, and Changshu Road.
French Concession Quick Summary
- Completely free — a neighborhood to explore, not a ticketed site
- Wukang Road: the triangular Wukang Mansion, designed by László Hudec
- Tianzifang: art and handicrafts, original shikumen houses preserved
- Nearest metro: Jiaotong University or Shanghai Library (Line 10, 11)
