Shanghai Museum: Free Entry, No Hassle
I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. The Shanghai Museum at People's Square is one of the world's most important museums of ancient Chinese art — bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, and artifacts spanning thousands of years. One of the best free things to do in the city.
Quick Answer
Shanghai Museum has completely free entry and is one of the world's leading museums of ancient Chinese art — bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, and artifacts spanning thousands of years.
How Much Is the Ticket?
Entry is completely free for foreign visitors — you just need your passport at the gate. As of September 2025, individual visitors no longer need a reservation for a regular visit — but during busy periods (public holidays, school breaks, special exhibitions) you do need to reserve in advance through the museum's official WeChat account (上海博物馆) or its website, up to 14 days ahead.

The museum is open 9am to 5pm (last admission 4pm), closed Mondays unless it falls on a public holiday. The address is 201 People's Avenue, and the nearest metro is People's Square on Lines 1, 2, and 8.
