I'm Hesham, and Here's What I've Learned Accompanying Arab Traders to Vet Factories in Shenzhen
The biggest mistake a new importer makes is wiring a full payment to a supplier based on nothing but WhatsApp photos and a tidy website. Shenzhen has thousands of "suppliers" — some are real factories, some are just middlemen buying from another factory and marking up the price. This guide explains how to tell them apart before you lose your money.
Quick Answer
Before any large payment, ask to visit the factory yourself or send a trusted representative. Signs of a real factory: an address in an industrial zone (not a commercial office tower), an actual production line they'll show you, and no hesitation about a visit. If they dodge the visit or keep stalling, that's a red flag.

Why Shenzhen Needs Extra Scrutiny
Shenzhen is China's electronics capital, and the Huaqiangbei district has thousands of shops and middlemen selling roughly the same product. That intense competition creates an environment with real factories and middlemen side by side, and it's sometimes hard to tell them apart from a first WhatsApp conversation.
Signs of a Real Factory
- Address: in a known industrial zone (like Bao'an or Longgang), not a commercial office tower downtown.
- Production line: they can show you a live video of the actual line, not stock photos pulled from the internet.
- Specialization: they make one product or a focused product category, not a "catalog" of everything under the sun.
- Welcomes a visit: they immediately welcome the idea of you or a representative visiting — no hesitation, no repeated excuses.

Middleman Warning Signs
- A catalog with wildly varied, unrelated products (electronics + clothing + toys all at once).
- They refuse to share their Chinese business license number, or keep stalling on it.
- Prices that are unreasonably cheaper than other suppliers for the exact same product.
Questions to Ask Yourself Before Any Payment
- "How many workers are on your production line?" — a fast, confident answer is a good sign.
- "Can I see a live video of the factory right now over WeChat video call?" — a real factory agrees easily.
- "Who are your other clients in my exact product category?" — they don't have to give names, but how they respond tells you a lot.
Can't Travel There Yourself?
This is exactly what I do for clients. I visit the factory on your behalf, film real video of the actual production line, verify the business license, and send you a detailed report before you approve any payment.
