Shipping from China: The Step Everyone Underestimates

Shipping from China to the Gulf isn't complicated, but it requires understanding a few essential terms and making the right decisions upfront. This guide covers everything you need.

Sea freight is cheaper (20-35 days), air freight is faster but pricier ($4-8/kg, 5-10 days). A 20ft container to Jeddah runs $1,800-3,500. Start with FOB terms — the clearest option for first-time importers.
Sea Freight vs Air Freight: Your First and Most Important Decision
- Sea Freight: For heavy or bulky goods. Much cheaper but takes 20–35 days from China to the Gulf. Available as Full Container Load (FCL) or Less than Container Load (LCL) for smaller shipments.
- Air Freight: For light or time-sensitive goods. Faster (5–10 days) but significantly more expensive — typically $4–8 per kg. Only suitable for high-value goods relative to their weight.
- Rail Freight: A growing option via the middle corridor. China to Gulf in roughly 15–20 days — a middle ground between sea and air that's expanding rapidly in 2026.
When to Choose Each Method
- Sea FCL (full container): Goods over 15 cbm or over $10,000 in value
- Sea LCL (consolidated): Goods between 1–15 cbm — you pay only for space used
- Air freight: Goods under 500kg, or time-critical shipments that can't tolerate delays
Incoterms — Know These Before Any Deal
Incoterms are international terms that define who pays for shipping and insurance, and at what point responsibility transfers from seller to buyer. Three dominate 90% of China trade:
- EXW (Ex Works): You pay everything from the factory door. Lowest apparent price but highest complexity. Best when you have a trusted freight agent in China.
- FOB (Free On Board): Supplier pays costs until goods are loaded onto the ship at the Chinese port. From there, shipping and insurance are your responsibility. Best for first-time importers — clear, balanced, widely understood.
- CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): Supplier pays shipping and insurance until the goods arrive at your port. Sounds convenient, but the supplier's shipping and insurance rates are often higher than what you could arrange independently.

Approximate rates from South China ports (Guangzhou, Shenzhen) to Gulf ports:

Documents You Need
This is where many importers make costly mistakes. Request these documents from your supplier before shipping:
- Commercial Invoice: Product details and prices. Make sure it reflects the real value — understating value for customs is fraud that risks seizure and large fines.
- Packing List: Itemised contents of each carton.
- Bill of Lading / Airway Bill: The ownership document for sea/air shipments.
- Certificate of Origin: Proves the goods are made in China. Required by customs in most countries.
- Halal Certificate: If importing food or food-contact materials to Gulf countries — mandatory.
- SASO / ESMA / GSO Certification: Conformity certificates for certain products in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and GCC countries.
Customs in Saudi Arabia & UAE
Saudi Arabia: 5% customs duty on most goods. Some products (certain foods, sensitive categories) have different rates or are restricted. 15% VAT applied at import. SASO certification required for electrical appliances and electronics.
UAE (Dubai / Jebel Ali): One of the world's most import-friendly ports. 5% customs duty in the customs zone. Jebel Ali Free Zone allows storage without customs duty until re-export — useful for Gulf-wide distribution.
Common Mistakes That Cost Arab Importers Money
- Undervaluing the invoice: Suppliers sometimes suggest writing a lower value to save customs. This is customs fraud — it risks seizure and large penalties.
- Skipping conformity certificates: An electrical device without SASO gets stopped at Saudi customs and returned or destroyed.
- Paying 100% upfront: 30% deposit + 70% before shipping is standard. Paying everything in advance with a new supplier is a significant risk.
- Choosing freight companies on price alone: Very cheap freight forwarders may delay or lose goods. Look for companies with a track record.
- Not insuring the shipment: Marine cargo insurance costs 0.3–0.5% of goods value. Never ship without it.
