Shop Like a Local, Not Like a Tourist

I'm Hesham, living in China since 2019. Most visitors only shop at malls, while Chinese locals themselves shop in completely different ways — apps, real bargaining at markets, and group buying. This is my guide to the real way to shop.

Quick Answer

Taobao accepts a foreign phone number and a Visa/Mastercard via Alipay — no Chinese ID needed. At markets like Yiwu and Beijing's Silk Street, bargaining is core to the experience — opening prices are always inflated. Locals use group-buying apps like Pinduoduo for real savings.

Taobao for Foreigners — Actually Possible

Taobao (China's biggest shopping platform) accepts registration with a foreign phone number — you pick your country code from the dropdown and use your normal number for verification, no Chinese ID or Chinese bank account needed. You link a foreign Visa or Mastercard to the Alipay app and pay directly. Note: not every country code is supported, so if yours isn't listed you'll need help from a Chinese friend or a buying agent.

Real Bargaining at the Markets

Yiwu specifically — the world's largest wholesale market — bargaining there is a core part of the experience, not optional. The first price quoted is always negotiable, especially for bulk quantities. At tourist-facing retail markets (like Silk Street in Beijing), bargaining is expected and the opening prices are usually inflated.

💡 Tip from experience: local Chinese use group-buying apps (like Pinduoduo) and livestream shopping to buy at heavily discounted prices — if you have the time and a Chinese friend to help, this is a real way to save a lot.

Quick Summary

  • Taobao: accepts a foreign phone number + Visa/Mastercard via Alipay
  • Yiwu: bargaining is a core part of the experience, especially for bulk
  • Tourist markets: opening prices are usually inflated
  • Group buying and livestream shopping: how locals save
