I'm Hesham Al-Daaja from Jordan, based in China since 2019. Most visitors rush from the Forbidden City to the Great Wall and somehow the Temple of Heaven (天坛 — Tiāntán) ends up as an afterthought. That's a mistake. Built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty, this is where emperors came twice a year to pray for good harvests. The complex covers 273 hectares — nearly four times the size of the Forbidden City — and it still has something the imperial palace lost centuries ago: atmosphere.

The Three Main Structures
- Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿): The iconic triple-roofed circular hall on a marble platform. Built entirely without nails. Blue tiles represent heaven. This is the postcard image of Beijing.
- Imperial Vault of Heaven (皇穹宇): Surrounded by the Echo Wall — whisper against it and someone 65 metres away can hear you clearly.
- Circular Mound Altar (圜丘坛): Open-air marble altar where emperors performed solstice ceremonies. Stand at the centre stone — your voice echoes back amplified. Emperors believed they stood at the centre of the universe here.
The Park — The Real Reason to Come
Every morning from 6:00 AM, Beijing residents fill the park for tai chi, ballroom dancing, calligraphy with water brushes on stone, badminton, and music. This is real Beijing daily life, not a tourist show. Arrive at 7:00 AM and you'll see more authentic Beijing culture in one hour than in a full day at the Forbidden City.

Tips from My Visits
- Enter from the south or east gate to walk the ceremonial axis north — as emperors did.
- The Echo Wall only works when quiet. Try it before 9 AM.
- Photography: the Hall of Prayer is best from the south approach at golden hour (around 5:30 PM).
- Combine with Tianqiao arts district — 15 minutes south, good street food and traditional performances.
