What's at Tiananmen Square?

Tiananmen Gate (天安门): The iconic gate with Mao's portrait — the south entrance to the Forbidden City. Climb it for ¥15 and walk across the top for a view looking into the Forbidden City.
Mao's Mausoleum (毛主席纪念堂): Free entry, requires advance registration. Open Tuesday–Sunday mornings (8:00–11:30 AM) only.
National Museum of China: One of the largest museums in the world, covering 5,000 years of history. Free with passport registration — worth 2–3 hours.
Great Hall of the People: China's parliament, open when not in session (¥30).

The Flag Ceremony

The daily flag-raising (at sunrise) and lowering (at sunset) is one of Beijing's most watched events. Times change daily — check in advance. Arrive 45 minutes early. PLA soldiers march from the Forbidden City with choreographed precision. Even if ceremony isn't your thing, it's genuinely impressive.

Tips

Bring your passport — required at every checkpoint.
No shade anywhere. In summer, the heat off the stone paving is intense — go early morning or late afternoon.
Photography is permitted. Drones absolutely are not.
The Forbidden City entrance is directly north of Tiananmen Gate — most people visit both in the same morning.
