I'm Hesham, and This Question Reaches Me Almost Every Week: Yiwu or Canton?
Many new importers ask me the same thing: "Should I go to Yiwu or the Canton Fair?" The honest answer: it depends on what you're importing, how much, and how much time you have. After years of accompanying Arab traders to both, this guide lays out the real difference.
Quick Answer
Yiwu is better for small-to-medium quantities, varied products with no strict minimum order, and you buy straight from the market year-round. The Canton Fair is better for large quantities straight from major factories, but it's limited to two windows a year (April and October) and needs pre-registration.

The Core Difference Between Yiwu and the Canton Fair
Yiwu isn't a fair — it's an entire city, officially the "Yiwu International Trade Market," with tens of thousands of wholesale shops, open year-round except Chinese holidays. The Canton Fair is the opposite: a temporary event, 3 phases, only twice a year (April and October), with exhibitors that are large factories formally accredited to the fair.
When to Choose Yiwu
- If you want small-to-medium quantities (even 50-100 pieces of one item) — many Yiwu shops have no strict minimum.
- If your product fits "varied small goods": accessories, toys, simple household items, decorations, gifts.
- If your schedule is flexible — you can go to Yiwu any month of the year, not tied to a fair date.

When to Choose the Canton Fair
- If you want large quantities (a full container or more) of one product or product line.
- If your product is technical or industrial (electronics, machinery, building materials) — this sector is much stronger at Canton than Yiwu.
- If you want to deal directly with a large, established factory with a documented export track record, not a wholesale middleman.
Budget & Time: Quick Comparison
Yiwu vs. Canton Fair
- Ideal time to visit: Yiwu - any time of year. Canton - April or October only.
- Suggested visit length: Yiwu - 3-5 days. Canton - 5-10 days depending on phases.
- Minimum order: Yiwu - often low or none. Canton - varies by factory, usually higher.
- Seller type: Yiwu - wholesalers and distributors. Canton - direct factories and export agents.
Can You Visit Both on One Trip?
Yes, and it's the smartest move if your schedule allows it. If you're already coming in April or October for the Canton Fair, add 2-3 days in Yiwu right after. You save a second flight and combine big wholesale deals with smaller-quantity diversification.
