Why Visit Zhuhai? A Small, Calm City by the Sea
Hello, I'm Hesham. Zhuhai (珠海) is one of the coastal cities I genuinely liked — small, clean, and calm compared to nearby cities like Guangzhou or Shenzhen. If you're looking for a quiet coastal destination in southern China away from the crowds, Zhuhai is an excellent choice.
Quick Answer
Zhuhai is a calm coastal city in southern China — the Zhuhai Opera House on the waterfront, fresh seafood, and an easy one-day trip to Macau via the Gongbei border crossing (minutes on foot, about 600m between entrances). A perfect add-on to a Guangzhou trip.
The Beach and the Seafood
Zhuhai has some lovely beaches you can walk along and relax at, and the seafood is very fresh given its coastal location — some of the best seafood I've had in southern China.
Landmarks Worth Seeing
One of the city's standout landmarks is Zhuhai Opera House (珠海大剧院), a striking piece of architecture on the waterfront shaped like two shells — a visual masterpiece worth photographing even if you don't catch a show inside.
The Easiest Day Trip: Macau
Zhuhai's biggest advantage is how close it is to Macau — the Gongbei border crossing (拱北口岸) gets you from the Chinese side to the Macau side on foot in just a few minutes (the two entrances are only about 600 meters apart), and the crossing itself is about half a kilometer from Zhuhai's main train station. That means you can head from Zhuhai to Macau for a full day, see the city, the casinos, and the historic Portuguese architecture, and be back the same day with zero hassle.
There's also a ferry option — direct ferries run from Wanzai Wharf in Zhuhai to the Macau Inner Harbour Ferry Terminal, a comfortable alternative if you'd rather travel by sea than cross the land border.
My Take
Zhuhai is worth a day or two on any trip through southern China — especially if you're already heading to Guangzhou or the Canton Fair and want to add a calm coastal stop plus a day trip to Macau.
